A set of five volumes from Edward Arber's 'English Reprints', containing popular literary works from the 16th and 17th century.
Arber's publication of this series, as well as his others such as 'English Garner', made detailed studying of these texts more accessible to the ordinary student.
Bound in this very scarce original green cloth, with gilt text to the spines.
Each work comes with its own introduction and historical contexts.
The entirety of this set includes the following:
1868 Areopagitica by John Milton (1644); Sermon on the Ploughers by Hugh Latimer (1549); The Schoole of Abuse (1579) and A Short Apologie of the Schoole of Abuse (1579) by Stephen Gossson.
1868 An Apologie for Poetrie by Sir Philip Sidney (1595); His Traualies by Edward Webbe (1590); Table-Talk by John Selden (1689).
1869 Seven Sermons Before Edward VI by Master Hugh Latimer (1549); Utopia by Sir Thomas More (translation pub. in 1556).
1869 Instructions for Forreine Travel by James Howell (1642); Roister Doister by Nicholas Udall (c1553-1566); The Revelation to the Monk of Evesham (c1196-1482); The Essayes of a Prentise, in the Divine Arte of Poesie and A Counterblaste to Tobacco by James VI of Scotland, I of England (1585 and 1604 respectively).
1870 Tottel's Miscellany: Songs and Sonnets by Henry Howard, Sir Thomas Wyatt, Nicholas Grimald, and Uncertain Authors (1557).
Condition
Bound in the original green cloth. Externally, smart, with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Marks to the boards, heaviest to 'Tottel's Miscellany', and damp stains to 'Latimer More'. Hinges at risk of detaching to 'Latimer More'. With the bookplate of one John Cannon to the front pastedowns of 'Howell, Udall etc.' and 'Latimer More'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a few scattered spots to the first and last few leaves, with instances throughout to 'Howell, Udall etc'.
