An incredibly scarce illustrated title from Welsh author, poet and travel writer Eric Linklater. 

Features a monochrome frontispiece, with labelled tissue guard, and 11 further monochrome plates. Collated, complete.

Within, the tale of Sweyn Asleifsson, the 12-century viking first recorded in the Orkneyinga Saga, which was written by an Icelandic scribe c. 1200 and narrates the old histories of Orkney and Shetland, and their interactions with the mainlands of Norway and Scotland.

This title traces Sweyn's flight across Orkney and Iceland, beginning when he murdered Earl Paul of Orkney's cup-bearer c.1134.

Condition

Bound in original blue cloth. Externally, smart. Mild rubbing to extremities. The odd small marks to boards. Age toning to endpapers. Slight strain to front hinge, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean.
