A charming limited edition of The Temple: Sacred Poems and Private Ejaculations, written by English poet, orator and Anglican priest George Herbert. Published by the Nonesuch Press in 1927, first published on the year of his death in 1633. This particular copy is no. 381 of 1500 copies made in Janson typeface.
In full calf, with a binding stamp from Knill and Sons in Reading to the front paste down. Contains a frontispiece of Herbert by R. White and C. Sigrist.
Despite being written in the seventeenth century, the poems are still celebrated today for their accessibility and rich honesty, being admired by C.S. Lewis, T.S. Eliot, and Simone Weil among many others. Known during his lifetime as a Latin orator, Herbert often speaks directly to God in his poetry, such as The Windowes, and Sinnes Round.
Condition
In full calf. Externally, smart, with the odd small mark to spine and rear board. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine, heavier to the extremities. Smudged marking to the extremities of the end papers. Binding stamp to front paste down is loose. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with minor age toning.
