The scarce first edition of Steeplejacks and Steeplejacking, a book on the hazardous and ancient trade, written by steeplejack William Larkins. Published by Jonathan Cape in 1925.

In the publisher's original orange cloth, with eight photographic plates, including a frontispiece of two steeplejacks cleaning Big Ben in 1924. Collated complete.

Despite being a perilous job that requires extraordinary courage and a confidence with heights, Steeplejacks are an often forgotten trade within society and this book brings to light the idiosyncrasies and challenges that these craftsmen must face when carrying out sky-high repairs.

The author, a steeplejack himself, offers insights and stories which makes one appreciate the difficulty yet excitement involved in such work.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth. Externally, smart, with the odd small mark and fading to the spine, and to the extremities. Minor knocks to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities, and marginal rubbing to joints. End papers are generally bright and clean with the odd small spot. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with slight age toning, and the odd spot to the extremities of the occasional leaf.
