The very scarce signed first edition of The World Aflame, written by American playwright and political activist Julius Hopp. Published by Theo. Gaus' and Sons in 1918, the same year that the First World War ended.
in only two institutions in the UK.
In the publisher's original pictorial cloth, with a signed inscription from Hopp on the front free end paper.
Julius Hopp was a significant figure on the New York theatre scene during the early twentieth century, being a member of the Shakespeare Theatre of New York, and also the president of the socialist Progressive Stage Society.
This particular play, inspired by the First World War, is a scathing attack on Kaiser Wilhelm II and dedicated to allied soldiers fallen. With the Americans joining in 1917, it would not be long after the play publishing that the war would end.
Condition
In the publisher's original blue pictorial cloth. Externally, very smart with bright clean boards. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine, with very minor marks to right edge of back board. End papers are bright and clean, with the odd faint spot to right edge of front free end paper. Front free end paper contains author's signed inscription. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with the very faint spot to right edge of leaves pp.18-20.
