Under Western Eyes is viewed as Conrad's response to themes presented in Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, indeed Conrad was reputed to have detested the Russian novelist. The major work remarks on the irrationality of life and the unfairness with which suffering is inflicted upon the innocent and poor.
Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British novelist and short story writer. Regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language, Conrad based many of his stories in nautical settings or crises of human individuality, and his narrative style and anti-heroic characters have influenced numerous authors.
