The novel that catalysed Tolstoy's ex-communication from the Russian Orthodox Church due to its critical reflection on the place of religion in contemporary Russian life, and how he concluded that the status quo of the 19th Century - heavily reliant on the Orthodox Church - did not offer real or lasting justice for the everyman.

Bound in original pictorial boards. Externally, in lovely condition. The odd mark to boards. Slight rubbing to extremities and spine motif. Occasional spot to endpapers. Front hinge starting. Bookseller sticker to rear free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Tear to p.14. Area of age toning to pp.46-47. Pages generally bright and clean.
