A collection of essays written by the prolific American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, a scarce edition as part of the Belles Lettres Series in the Royal Library. Published by Arthur L. Humphreys in 1908.

A fine binding in full calf by Hatchards in London, the prestigious royal booksellers and the oldest bookshop in the United Kingdom.

As a philosopher, Emerson was best known for bringing Indian, Chinese and Persian thought to American audiences, becoming an important figure in nineteenth century western philosophy. The seven essays include those on self-reliance, love, friendship, the over-soul, intellect, character and manners.

Condition

A fine binding in full calf. Externally, attractive, with minimal marks to decorative boards. Slight rubbing to the rear joint, heavier to the front joint, where front board has detached. Slight signs of edgewear and fading to spine. End papers are clean with minimal marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with the rare small spot to top edges of leaves.
