A scarce work to contain these illustrations by Gustave Dore.
A wonderfully illustrated work containing John Milton's celebrated epic poem, 'Paradise Lost', with fifty full-page, striking plates in black-and-white, depicting scenes from the poem.
Accompanying illustrations after engravings by Dore, a French printmaker, painter and illustrator known for his prolific creation of wood engravings illustrating classic literature, notably Dante's Divine Comedy, the Vulgate Bible, and numerous others.
Collated, complete.
Edited by Robert Vaughan, with notes and a life of Milton.
Condition
Bound in half calf with cloth to the boards. Externally, very good, with slight bumping to the extremities and light marking to boards and leather. Light rubbing to the extremities. Small areas of staining to the board extremities, heavier to rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with areas of light scattered spotting, not affecting the illustrations, although with light spots the the verso of the plates.
