The sought after second edition of A Shropshire Lad, a poetic cycle, written by English poet and scholar A.E. Housman. Published by Grant Richards in 1898. First published by Paul Kegan in 1896. One of five hundred copies.

In the publisher's original green cloth, containing a leaf of reviews of the first edition, and a leaf of publisher's original advertisements at the rear of the book.

When first released by Paul Kegan in 1896, the book wasn't a success, and with it only being this second edition published by Grant Richards that quickly sold out all five hundred copies before going through many further editions and reprints since.

The cycle was a especially popular among younger audiences, particularly during the build-up and the struggles of the First World War, who found the pessimism, focus on death, and melancholy themes reminiscent. George Orwell was a particular admirer of the collection.

Condition

In the publisher's original green cloth. Externally, smart, with minimal marks to boards. Fading to the spine, and to the extremities. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. End papers are generally bright and clean, with faint signs of browning. Previous owner's bookplate to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with minor age toning and the rare small mark to leaf extremities.
