The first edition of the respected biography Ford Madox Brown: A Record of His Life and Works, written by English novelist and critic Ford Madox Heuffer, otherwise known as Ford Madox Ford, the maternal grandson of the artist. Published by Longmans, Green, and Co. in 1896.
In the publisher's original white pictorial cloth, with a frontispiece of Madox's painting Jesus Washes Peter's Feet. Contains all other forty-six other illustrated plates, including a portrait of the artist adjoining p.1. Collated complete.
Brown was a very influential painter and a significant member of the pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, often focusing on moral and historical subjects, such as Oliver Cromwell. One of his earliest works, Heuffer's biography of his grandfather's fascinating life and works precedes his founding of the prestigious English Review and his praised novel The Good Soldier (1915).
Condition
In the publisher's original white pictorial cloth. Externally, very smart, with the faint odd mark to boards. Fading to the spine, with the odd small graze and mark. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Black end papers are clean. Previous owner's bookplate to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound, with slight signs of wear between pp.190-191. Pages are bright and clean.
