First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding

The first edition, first impression, first state of this work, as identified by the missing letters in the final two lines of text on page 110.

This was Joseph Conrad's first novel, and is set in the Borneo jungle, following the Dutch trader Kaspar Almayer and Nina, his mixed-race daughter, as he searches for a goldmine.

Conrad worked on the manuscript intermittently over five years, nearly losing it during his time in the Congo.

Former owner's inscription to front free endpaper.

Wise (1) suggests that 2,000 copies of this first edition were produced.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Boards bright, with back strip age toned. Bumping to back strip tail, with small loss of cloth to back strip head. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
