After becoming restless and demotivated as a part of the family business, Thoreau decided to build his own small hut by Walden Pond in Massachusetts. What followed was an incredible period of reflection in which he wrote several fascinating essays. The experience was critical in shaping his beliefs and love of nature.
Attacking slavery, the work would later gain great influence in the American civil rights movement of the 20th century.
