The first edition of Meat Production: A Manual for Producers, Distributors, and Consumers of Butchers' Meat, Being a Treatise on Means of Increasing Its Home Production, written by land surveyor and agricultural engineer John Ewart. Published by Crosby Lockwood and Co. in 1878.

In the publisher's original red cloth, with a frontispiece showing the 'various points of cattle' and numerous in-text illustrations. Contains inserts with contemporary reviews to front blanks, verso of title leaf, and a record of the Dressed Carcase competition in 1885 on the first of many advertisement leaves at the rear of the book.

A very knowledgeable guide on meat production, including on pasture management, breeding, rearing, feeding, slaughtering and preservation. Compared to other works, Ewart is one of the first to apply the application and management of land, including soil fertility, to the importance of the meat industry in the British Isles.

Condition

In the publisher's' original red cloth. Externally, with staining to boards and spine. Mild bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Black end papers are generally clean, with slight fading to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound, with slight wear to hinges between leaves pp.64-65 and pp.80-81. Pages are bright and clean, with the rare mark and minor age toning.
