Scarce first edition. 

Bound in half calf, with cloth boards. Bound with half title. 

The building of the Suez Canal, which serves as a key trade route between Europe and Asia, was first proposed by French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps, with construction lasting from 1859-1869. 

This volume thus serves as an early example of Lesseps' ideas and clarifications on the purpose and development of the canal. He discusses the political, commercial and religious interests of various countries such as Turkey, and the contribution of the Egyptian government. 

Condition

Bound in half calf, with cloth boards. Externally, smart, with rubbing to the extremities and a couple marks and dark spots. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with occasional scattered spots.
