Webster's Improved Dictionary, a revised edition of the original An American Dictionary of the English Lanugage, written by eminent American lexicographer Noah Webster. Revised and edited by C.A. Goodrich and Thomas Herber, with additional chapters at the end of each volume by Henry Noel Humphreys and John Stodart. Two volumes, a complete set. Published by William Mackenzie in 1858, fifteen years after Webster's death. First published in 1828. 

In fine red half-calf, with green cloth boards. A decorative title leaf and a frontispiece to volume I. 

Webster's dictionary, which originally took twenty-six years to complete, has today become the most popular and respected English dictionary in the United States, now more popularly known as the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. These two volumes are an updated edition that celebrate his success.

Volume I - Letters A - L, also includes an essay The Origin and Progress of the Art of Writing,  written by Henry Noel Humphreys.
Volume II - Letters M-Z, also includes the essay Comprehending Universal Grammar, written by John Stoddard and revised by William Hazlitt.

Condition

In fine red half-calf, with green cloth boards. Externally, smart, with minimal marks to boards. Slight rubbing to joints and calf extremities, with slight lift to calf to bottom extremities of front boards, heavier to volume I. Fading and slight rubbing to spines Marble end papers are in excellent condition. Internally firmly bound, with slight creasing to central hinges of volume II, heaviest to leaves pp.208-209. Pages are bright and clean, with the small mark to the extremities of the rare leaf in volume II.
