Description

First Edition, Leather Binding

The first edition of this work. Complete in three volumes.

Uniformly bound in quarter calf, with cloth boards. Renewed endpapers. Leaf of publisher's advertisements to the rear of Vol. III.

A lovely example of this socio-political novel from former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Benjamin Disraeli.

Sybil traces the plight of the working classes of England, mirroring Disraeli's interest (stemming from the Chartist movement) in dealing with the horrific conditions in which the majority of the country's working classes lived.

The novel also examines the moral corruption inherent in forcing children to work under such conditions. The characters of the sixteen-year-old Dandy Mick and Devilsdust, who is abandoned by his mother and left to fend for himself, are particularly emblematic of this.

Condition

Uniformly bound in quarter calf, with cloth boards. Externally, excellent, with minimal shelf wear and a few marks to the calf. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with the occasional spots.
