The scarce first abridged edition of The Two Friends, a nineteenth century novel written by Irish author Marguerite Gardiner, Countess of Blessington. Published by Baudry's European Library in 1835. First published the same year as three volumes by Saunders and Otley.
In quarter decorative calf, with attractive marble boards.
Following the friendship of two aristocrats leading up to the July Revolution of 1830 in France, Blessington writes with an astute awareness of nineteenth century aristocratic society and the intrigue within it. Blessington a talented novelist known for her charm and wit, was also a literary hostess friends with Lord Byron.
Condition
In quarter calf, with marble boards. Externally, very smart. A couple of marks to back boards and slight fading mark to right edge of front board. The small odd rubbing mark to calf spine and joints. Very slight edgewear. Marble end papers are bright and clean, with slight damage to right edge of front free end paper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the small odd spot and smudging, slightly heavier to first and last leaves.
