The scarce first edition of this work, the first collected edition of the works of Edward Stillingfleet, edited for publication by his son, James Stillingfleet.

An impressive collected edition of the works of this Christian theologian and scholar. Considered an outstanding preacher as well as a strong polemical writer on defending Anglicanism, Stillingfleet was known as "the beauty of holiness" for his handsome appearance.

With the bookplate of the General Theological Seminary to pastedowns, with blind stamp and ink stamp to title page.

Rebacked, with endpapers renewed.

At his death Stillingfleet left a library of 10,000 books, which were purchased by Narcissus Marsh and today are part of Marsh's Library in Dublin.

Condition

Rebacked in cloth, retaining the original panelled calf boards. Paper label to back strip, with loss of calf to head of fore edge of front board. Endpapers renewed, with bookplates to pastedowns. Internally, binding strained. Pages age toned, with spotting to perimeters. Ink stamp and blind stamp to title page.
